Buenos Aires: we came, we saw, we walked.

27 Nov

BA is a really enormous city and as such the areas are quite distinctive.  The main ones are:

Microcenter (where we stayed the first three nights) – this is typical of any heart of a city – busy, jam-packed and a bit grubby.

San Telmo & La Boca – south of the centre, hippie areas with lots of character. They’re known for their antique stores, tango and big weekend markets. Some parts of La Boca are dangerous though.

Retiro, Recoleta & Palermo – north of the centre and are home to the upscale museums, shops and eateries.  We stayed in Palermo the last 2 nights and enjoyed the clean leafy streets.  It’s the Claremont of Perth.

We walked everywhere and a bunch of the sights we visited are listed below.  It made me smile every day because the sun is shining and it’s HOT (above 30C each day).  Plus the Jacaranda trees all over the city are blooming and shower the streets with their flowers.

4.30am, Alarm goes off and I could definitely do with another couple of hours sleep! In typical fashion after spending a couple of weeks back in blighty, Friday night at the Wheatsheaf  rolled into Saturday night at the Wild Duck which culminated with a farewell dinner last night at the potting shed in Crudwell with mum.

Country life in the Cotswolds

18 Nov

The last couple of weeks have been a relaxing time in the Cotswolds, catching up with Matt’s family and friends. For those who haven’t been able to visit this beautiful countryside, the Cotswolds is…

… a range of hills in west central England, an area 25 miles across and 90 miles long. It lies mainly within the counties of Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire but extend into parts of Wiltshire, Somerset, Worcestershire and Warwickshire.

3 days in Singapore

2 Nov

I was surprised to find how much I really enjoyed Singapore.  I thought I’d find such a big, populated city to lack character and to be a little soulless.  But it was the complete opposite. Singapore is constantly buzzing and the people are so friendly. It’s a very transient place and an interesting fusion of Chinese, Indian, and Malaysian cuisine and culture.

3 weeks in Perth and falling off the wagon

31 Oct

Happy birthday to both our sisters!

Our perth leg of the trip kicked off with a bang with me attending a gourmet bbq at Cara’s place and Matt catching up with the boys for beers, marking the beginning of the wheels of the sober-and-sane wagon coming completely unravelled.  Some of my Perth highlights include…

Melbourne – The Nullabor – Perth

7 Oct

Lets drive from Melbourne to Perth. Sounds fun, right? Sounds like something different, right? What an adventure, right? Going “outside the square”! Mmm.  Well you certainly realise how mighty big this country is that we live in. And the number of grey nomads who have decided to escape the grandkids and go on a trek around oz in their campers.

6 days we took to drive from Melbourne to Perth but you could easily do it in 4. Here’s a run-down of our journey…

Hola amigos!

1 Oct

Ok first entry so be kind.

SO.  Leaving melbourne…

Sad.  Cold.  Sad. Didnt want to say goodbye.  Sad.  Lets drink.  Saaaad.

I’ve always said Melbourne is one of the most liveable cities.  It doesn’t matter what your interests are – sport, art, music, shopping, gastronomy, el vino tinto (my personal fave) – they can be fulfilled in m-town.
